Matsuyama Castle's tenshukaku (the main keep of the castle) and its magnificent stone walls can be photographed together from this classic shooting spot.

Although there was still some time before sunset, as I walked toward Matsuyama Castle in the late afternoon, the gentle light of the setting sun illuminated the stone walls. The wind carried the shadows of the leaves across the surface, creating a soft, flickering pattern. It was a peaceful moment that made me feel quietly happy.

The tenshukaku (main keep) of Matsuyama Castle, visible beyond the stone walls of the Taiko Yagura in the upper right of the photo, looked beautiful as always. From this point it still appears somewhat distant, but if you walk straight without stopping, you can reach it in less than five minutes--so it's not as far as it looks.

This photo was taken on May 24, 2026, at 18:01. During this time of day, the number of domestic and international visitors to Matsuyama Castle drops dramatically. For those who want to take photos slowly and peacefully without many people around, this late-afternoon period (or early morning) is an excellent choice.

The clear blue sky behind Tonashimon Gate (a gate without doors) was stunning. Although patches of dull gray clouds floated here and there, the bright, vivid blue sky contrasted beautifully with the gate below. The moment I saw this scene, I couldn't help but think, "Tonashimon looks beautiful today as well." Aside from the tenshukaku (main keep) itself, this might be my favorite photo spot in all of Matsuyama Castle.
